Strong families today for a stronger community tomorrow

Gratitude Galore

Friday Food Fair Volunteers

The sweltering Texas heat continues but it's not hot enough to stop our Family Support Services staff or amazing volunteers from distributing food to Houston's East End Community.

We extend our most sincere appreciation to volunteers who recently helped with our Friday Food Fair: The Junior League of Houston, Inc., Julio Saldivar of Molina Healthcare, the Barrera family and  Mr. Rodrigo Ramirez of International Trucks of Houston.

Countdown to College

The Sky is the Limit

Countdown to College is a summer program held at Community Family Centers designed to provide information about how to prepare for college. This summer participants heard from speakers who work in various fields of interest, visited university campuses including University of Houston-Downtown, Texas State University in San Marcos, Houston Community College Southeast and San Jacinto College, and participated in workshops that gave them information about everything they could possibly want to know regarding applying for college, choosing a career, and finding a job! This program was available completely FREE of charge.

For more information about future offerings, please contact Rosalba Castillo, Director of Youth Services, at 713-923-2316 or

Dr. Mesias Pedroza

A Role Model for Our Youth

We were honored to welcome Dr. Medias Pedroza to speak to participants of CFC's Camp Fresh.  Dr. Pedroza shared with the youth group his pathway to higher education and his path to becoming a researcher and professor. He also shared how he feels it is important to be actively involved in community service.

Dr. Pedroza is a Lecturer at the University of Houston-Downtown in the Natural Sciences Department in the College of Science and Technology.   He is also a researcher at the Baylor College of Medicine.   He is active in his congregation at Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and in the community with addressing issues that affect families and communities such as food insecurity & homelessness. He has coordinated social service events that assist immigrant shelters for women and children, visit nursing home residents and the Ronald McDonald House Charities at the Texas Medical Center.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and

become more, you are a leader."

- John Quincy Adams

Community Family Centers is comprised of many leaders. Our employees; from our maintenance staff, to our administrative personnel, to our management team, all serve this community with passion and dedication.  Our teachers inspire our students of all ages. Our volunteers give generously of their time in service to others. Our partners offer us resources and support that allow us to better serve our community.  We all come together to fulfill the mission of CFC: to equip families with the tools they need to become self-sufficient members of the community.

We are proud of our commitment to leadership.  How may we be of service  to you?

CenterPoint Energy

We Appreciate You!

CenterPoint Energy donated 13 laptop computers to Community Family Centers. The laptops were well received and appreciated by students of CFC's Adult Education Program.  We extend our most sincere thanks to Gloria Luna Bounds of CenterPoint Energy for her assistance in making this donation to CFC a possibility.

Bank of America

Summer Youth Internship Program

This summer we had two wonderful interns, Jailene Garcia and John Marrero join us from Bank of America’s Summer Youth Internship Program. This program offered them the opportunity to gain real-world experience at local nonprofit organizations by working with participants of CFC's Camp Fresh.

We went into the Life of an Intern and asked Jailene to describe Community Family Centers’ mission in her own words:

In the few weeks that I have been able to work at Community Family Center I have come to the conclusion that the workers and volunteers here want nothing but the best for the children attending the Camp Fresh Summer Program. The program ensures that the children do not stop learning even though they are on break, and also helps prepare them for the upcoming grade level that they will be going to.

Summer is for STEM

UW Summer Education Collaboration

Through the United Way of Greater Houston Summer Education Collaboration, the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council partnered with the Children's Museum of Houston to give 20 girls from Community Family Centers the opportunity to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The young ladies learned problem solving, experimented with conductive material to learn about electricity, created a moving device with hydraulics and built their own music box.

We are proud of the partnership that offered these young ladies a great way to stay engaged during the summer months.
